In New Jersey, a charge of reckless driving carries serious penalties. According to Chapter 39, Section 4-96 of the New Jersey Motor Vehicles and Traffic Regulation are facing penalties that may include "punished by imprisonment in the county or municipal jail for a period of not more than 60 days, or by a fine of not less than $50.00 or more than $200.00, or both". In addition, you may also be facing a point restriction on your driver's license.
Points added to license
When you are convicted of reckless driving in New Jersey, if found guilty you will have five (5) points placed against your driver's license. The New Jersey DMV tracks all of the points that are placed against your license and building up twelve (12) points can lead to the suspension of your driving privileges.
Approved vendors
For New Jersey drivers who have been convicted of reckless driving, you can have two (2) points removed if you take a defensive driving course from an approved vendor. In addition, depending on the circumstances, a qualified attorney may help you have the charges reduced or dropped.
Insurance rates
In most states, and New Jersey is no exception, the points that are added to your license mean your insurance rates are higher. If you complete an approved course, you may contact your insurance company to request that your rate be evaluated for possible reduction. It is likely you will be required to provide proof that you have had the points removed from your license.
Do not let charges impact you unnecessarily
It is important if you are stopped and charged with reckless driving in New Jersey that you contact a traffic attorney immediately. In some cases, you may be able to have the charges reduced (or dismissed). Do not risk your freedom, your driver's license or your financial future.
