Car accident injuries cause confusion and stress for many involved. It is important to know the coverage that is available to you depending on the circumstances of your accident. The following will focus on a whiplash injury.
A whiplash injury is a soft tissue injury to the neck. It is caused by a sudden movement, for instance, being tossed around a vehicle during an auto accident. Whiplash injuries can actually often heal on their own; however, there are certain instances where treatment is necessary for the injured party.
Medical Payments coverage is an elected first party coverage on an auto policy. This means a policy holder chooses whether they will have this coverage at the time of purchase. Medical Payments is afforded for car accident injuries to the policy holder or insured individual regardless of fault. This coverage is for medical bills only. It does not cover lost wages or pain and suffering, nor the inconvenience of being involved in the accident.
If you have been deemed at fault for an accident, or it was a single vehicle accident, for instance in bad weather, or with a wild animal, you will be eligible for medical payments coverage (if it was elected on your policy). Medical payments coverage is a contracted amount determined at the time of purchase. Once this amount has been exhausted there are no further funds for bills. If the entire amount is not used, the injured party will not receive the balance in cash.
In short, your own insurance company does not compensate you for car accident injuries, they will aid with bills though.
