Question:

What happens in DUI school?

Answer:

One of the most positive consequences of a DUI conviction may be the opportunity to take DUI driving school. It may allow you to have your charges dismissed in some states, have the sentence reduced to probation in others, and avoid license suspensions in still others. The classes may last from a few hours to several months, depending on state requirements. They may also cost several hundred to several thousand dollars. The requirements of the classes generally include:

  • Regular attendance
  • Active participation
  • Evidence that you are free of the substances that resulted in the DUI charge

While there are no tests, the instructor has sole authority to award your certificate of completion. If a participant does not appear to have absorbed the information taught, they may not obtain their certificate and more serious consequences may ensue.

DUI school classes often include an alcohol evaluation to determine your level of alcohol dependence and how best to help you. In addition, some of the subjects covered may include:

  • Substance abuse laws and penalties
  • How to prevent further DUI arrests
  • Reasons and tips for controlling or stopping alcohol use
  • Help to stop binge drinking and alcoholism

DUI school can reduce or dismiss some of the other penalties for DUI convictions, so it is a wise option to request it during the sentencing stage of your hearing. Often it takes the negotiating skills of an experienced DUI attorney to obtain this option.
