Question:

My license was suspended after a DUI. Can I get it back?

Answer:

For some people, having a suspended drivers license can be the harshest driving under the influence, or DUI, penalty.  Therefore, after your period of suspension is over, you may want to get your drivers license back as soon as possible.  Each state has its own rules and procedures to have your drivers license reinstated.  For example, the state of Michigan requires that you schedule a hearing to show that your substance abuse program is under control before you can have your drives license reinstated.  Therefore, it is important to become familiar with the rules and procedures in your state.

First, complete all terms of your DUI conviction.  This may include attending substance abuse classes, paying a fine, serving jail time, or completing any required community service hours. Next, contact your car insurance carrier to see what they need in order to insure you. In addition, your state may require that you complete a SR-22 form.  Ask your insurance carrier to complete the SR-22 form for you and then submit it to your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles, or DMV.  Finally, pay the fee to have your drivers license reinstated.

Be aware that driving on a suspended or revoked license or proof of driving on a suspended or revoked license can cause your license to be suspended for an additional term.  If you have questions about your suspended drivers license, contact an experienced criminal attorney in your state as soon as reasonably possible.
