A DUI conviction can, in some cases, cause major problems for your job. The relationship between DUI and employment will depend on what your job is and what the requirements are.
The first and most obvious problem associated with a DUI is if you have a job that requires you to drive. With a DUI, you are going to lose your license for a period of time- even for a first offense. Obviously, if you have a commercial drivers license (CDL) this creates a major issue... but it can also create an issue in many other jobs too. For example, if you are a nanny and your job involves taking the kids to and from school, then your job may be in jeopardy if you no longer have a license.
A DUI can also cause long-term problems, even if you do not need your license for your job or if you have already gotten your license back. Issues can arise because a DUI is a criminal charge, not just a traffic citation. This means you are going to have a criminal record and it is going to show up in a background check. When an employer runs this background check, the record of the DUI may be a red flag that makes you less desirable than another candidate. Sometimes, if the job you are doing requires you to have no criminal record at all, it can be an automatic disqualifying factor.
The bottom line is, DUI has serious consequences on your life. If you have been accused of DUI, you need to call a lawyer right away to get help dealing with the charges in the best way possible.
