Question:

What can I do if my auto insurance policy is cancelled for reckless driving?

Answer:

In most cases, insurance companies cancel car insurance coverage for the following reasons:

  • You have committed insurance fraud
  • You have failed to pay your premium
  • Your license has been suspended or revoked

If you have been issued tickets for reckless driving, but somehow have NOT lost your license as a result, it is not likely that your car insurance company will issue a non-voluntary cancellation.

However, your insurance carrier can choose not to renew your coverage.  The insurance company can offer you very little notice of their intention not to renew your coverage, depending on state and company policies.  You can face non-renewal for:

  • DUI arrests (after a DUI arrest, you may need an SR22 insurance form to get your license back)
  • Excessive speeding tickets and accidents
  • Reckless driving in other forms

If you are facing cancellation or non-renewal because of your driving record, you can still find car insurance coverage under “high risk” policies, but expect to pay much higher rates than you would if you had a better driving record.  Policies issued to “high risk” drivers are typically non-standard policies involving higher premiums and deductibles to help the insurance company protect its interests against the risk posed by your driving record.  You will need to shop around for companies that carry and are willing to offer you such policies.

If you are charged with DUi, driving recklessly or you receive any other citation that could put your insurance or license in jeopardy, you may wish to consult with an experienced attorney who can help you to fight the citation and avoid some of the negative consequences associated with it.
