I'm a truck driver. What do I do if I can't afford to pay my speeding ticket?

If you are a truck driver and you have been issued a speeding ticket for going over the speed limit with a commercial license, you have several options.  You can simply plead guilty and pay the speeding ticket, but what happens if you cannot afford to do that?   

Many attorneys claim that the best strategy is to fight the ticket, especially because speeding tickets can cost you hundreds of dollars as a truck driver.  Such speeding tickets can include:

• The cost of the ticket itself
• Court fees
• Speeding ticket taxes, which are charged to drivers with multiple tickets
• DMV fines and fees
• Insurance company fees and premium hikes

If you cannot afford to pay your speeding ticket and decide to fight it in court, consider these options: 

• You can consult with an attorney, especially if this ticket is one of others that you have received.  If you do not want to lose your commercial driver’s license or face stiff penalties, you may need the advice of an experienced attorney.

• Some attorneys will advise you to plead not guilty and even ask for a jury trial in your case. 

• You may also want to request that you be sent to traffic school rather than paying the fine or pleading guilty.
