Determining the number of license points a driver has is an important task. In reality, the number of points on one’s license can influence a number of items, including the insurance premiums paid by a driver, the validity of the license itself, and allow drivers to make informed choices when deciding whether to contest a traffic citation. However, obtaining a definitive number and associated list of convictions, is not as easy as many drivers believe. In practice, the only reliable source of information on how to determine how many points a driver has on his or her license will be through contacting the state variation of a motor vehicle department in the state of their current residence. In general, states that implement a points based system to track driver traffic violations will have some method of allowing driver’s to check the current status of their license, as well as the number of points applied to the license currently. Most states employ some form of online website feature to allow drivers to do this, while other states still employ a telephone hotline system to aid drivers in determining how many points are on their license. In the vast majority of cases, these services are free, but require a somewhat involved process for confirming one’s identification. In the worst-case scenario, a driver can contact the motor vehicle department in his or her state and request a copy of his or her driving record or driving history, which may include payment of a small fee.
