Question:

How can I find out if I have a warrant for a traffic ticket?

Answer:

Getting a warrant for a traffic ticket is never a good thing. Such warrants, often referred to as bench warrants, may be issued if you do not show up to court when required or otherwise deal with your traffic tickets by paying the fines. If you have a warrant out, or you think you might have a warrant out, you could be in danger of being arrested if you are pulled over again or if you have any sort of interaction with law enforcement. As such, it is important for you to determine warrant traffic tickets.

You have a few options to find out if you have a warrant out for your arrest:

  • You can call the court or police station in the jurisdiction where you believe the warrant may be out for your arrest. It is not generally recommended to show up in person to do this, since you could then be arrested on the spot. Most jurisdictions will give out this information to you over the phone
  • You could do a public records search. Sometimes, an active warrant will show up. There are also firms that will do this for you, for a fee
  • You could see if your court has "amnesty days." These are essentially days where the courts will let you take care of outstanding bench warrants by coming to court and dealing with the traffic ticket or tickets that caused the warrant to be issued in the first place. If you come to court on an amnesty day, you won't be arrested when you show up to deal with the warrant.

You can also contact a lawyer, who can assist you not just in finding out if you have a warrant, but who can also help you to deal with it if you do.
