Question:

What can I do to see if I have a warrant for a parking ticket without putting myself in jeopardy?

Answer:

Getting a warrant unpaid parking ticket can cause you major problems. If you have an outstanding bench warrant or traffic ticket warrant out in your name, this could show up on background checks if you try to get a job or rent an apartment. This could also result in you getting arrested if you are ever pulled over and your license is run through the computer or if you otherwise find yourself dealing with a law enforcement official who checks your records. You don't want this to happen, of course, so you need to be proactive in finding out if there is an outstanding warrant out there for you.

To find out if there is, you have a few options:

  • Your best option is to call the local court and find out if they have an "amnesty day." Many jurisdictions are putting these into place now to create an easier way to deal with bench warrants. On this day, those with traffic warrants or unpaid traffic tickets can come to court without fear of arrest to resolve the tickets, pay their fines and get rid of the warrants. This is going to be the easiest way to deal with your warrant
  • You can call the court house or police station where you believe the warrant may have been issued. They may give you the information over the phone. Don't try to do this in person, though, unless you want to end up in a jail cell once they pull your information and find out you do have a warrant
  • You could essentially do a background check or public records search on yourself. Sometimes, you may have to pay a fee to do this, but it may be worth it for peace of mind to find out for sure if you have a ticket.

Another great option is to call a lawyer. Your lawyer can find out if you have a warrant issued for you, and he can also help you to take the necessary steps to deal with it if you do.
