Question:

Are seat belt tickets more expensive for children?

Answer:

According to the reports of The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one accident happens every 15 seconds. Children are more susceptible to accidents and therefore, the US state laws has introduced expensive seat belt tickets so that the traffic rules are taken seriously by elders in – charge of children.

The US law has given the power to individual states for deciding the seat belt ticket amount and thus, each state has its own legislation. For instance, in Texas, the seat belt ticker for children costs anywhere between $25 and $200. The legislations are not a means to curb the individual’s freedom but there are factual reasons for enforcing the wearing of seat belts, especially for children.

Firstly, seat belts prevents serious injuries and thus, according to the North Carolina Trauma Registry, children spend little time on ventilators and ICU, which otherwise will increase almost by $8000 per person.

Secondly, seat belts save around 11,000 lives per year. The NHTSA advises that students below 12 years of age should wear seat belts properly buckled in the car back seats. In case of speeding or accidents causes, the driver or the culprit needs to pay seat belt ticket for the child because his / her life might have come into danger. In several laws of US states, it is stated that unless a child is above 13 years, they cannot sit in the passenger seat.

Therefore, yes, the seat belt ticket for children is expensive if the adult in – charge violates the traffic rules.
