In Tennessee, you accumulate points on your driver’s license for speeding, accidents, and most moving traffic violations; and these points can result in a Tennessee driver’s license suspension. Points for violations range from 2 to 8 per violation. The accumulation of 12 or more points in a twelve month period will necessitate your receiving a proposed suspension notice. However, before your Tennessee license is revoked or suspended, you will be entitled to a hearing to determine the future of your driving privileges.
Each time you receive a ticket or are in an accident, the computer will scan back 24 months. This however does not mean that information beyond the 24 months is wiped off. It is just no longer considered for current violations. Insurance companies generally acquire information 3 years back from the day you apply. Generally, points actually stay on your record anywhere from 5 to 10 years even though the state only pulls up the past 24 months each time you receive a new violation.
You can help yourself by taking a driver safety class, a defensive driving class, and by obeying the traffic laws. You can educate yourself on traffic violations so that you can try to avoid receiving points when you go to court. You might want to seek the advice of an experienced attorney on how to minimize the effect of these points and prevent getting additional ones.
