Question:

What fees and charges are included in a speeding ticket fine?

Answer:

If you have been issued a speeding ticket, even for going as little as 5 or 10 miles over the speeding limit, you may be facing several fees and charges that are associated with speeding tickets.  Of course these fees can var by state- for example, the California speeding ticket fines may be different than those issued in other states.

As a general matter, however, fees include:

  1. The cost of the ticket itself.  This may not seem like a lot at first, especially for minor infractions.  The ticket might cost $50 or $100 initially, but paying the ticket (and thus accepting guilt for the ticket) can amount to additional fees down the road.
  2. In addition to the ticket cost, you may have to pay court fees.  In some states this is as little as $15, but in some states it is significantly more than that.
  3. In some states, you will be charged a “speeding tax,” which is not an official name, but refers to the fees you are charged if you get repeat speeding tickets.
  4. The greatest fees associated with speeding tickets are those assessed by your insurance carrier.  You car insurance company can charge you exorbitant fees for each speeding ticket you are issued, amounting to hundreds of dollars over your current premium rates.

To avoid all of these fees, drive safely and obey all posted speed limits. You should also consider speaking with an experienced attorney if you do get pulled over to see if your lawyer can help you to do anything to fight the speeding ticket.
