Michigan has some of the harshest penalties for DWI’s in the country, and getting drivers license back will take some time. If you have received two convictions for DWI’s within seven years, you are presumed to be a habitual alcohol violator. Your driver’s license will be revoked for a minimum of five years. After waiting the five years of your suspension, you may apply for a hearing before the Driver Assessment and Appeal Division, or DAAD.
You must complete a substance abuse evaluation before the state of Michigan will schedule a hearing for you. Notify your evaluator of your desire to have your driver’s license reinstated. Your evaluator must state that you are not likely to drink and drive again if you regain your driving privileges. At your hearing, you must show that you have control of your alcohol abuse problem. You must show the DAAD that you have not touched alcohol for at least one year. Regular attendance at AA meetings is strong evidence that you are actively seeking help for your alcohol abuse problem. You are only allowed one hearing per year, so you must be prepared for the hearing.
