Ignition Interlock Devices in Arizona

When is an IID Authorized?

Arizona passed legislation in 2007 that expanded the use of ignition interlock devices (IIDs).

When are IIDs Required?

Arizona courts are required to order the installation and maintenance of an IID as a condition of reinstatement of driving privileges when:

  • An individual who is convicted of a first or second offense DUI or extreme DUI, is required to use an IID for at least 12 months.
  • An individual who is convicted of first time extreme DUI and whose BAC was 0.20 or more must have an IID for 18 months and
  • A person who is convicted of second offense extreme DUI with a BAC of 0.20 or more or aggravated DUI must install an IID for 24 months.

Additionally, the court may order an individual to install an IID for more than 12 or 24 months. The IID requirement begins on the date the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) receives the report of conviction or the date of the person’s license reinstatement, whichever is later.

In addition, Arizona drivers must be eligible for the Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver License, (SIIRDL) from the Arizona MVD. If you obtain an IID and a SIIRDL, you can drive to and from your job, school, alcohol treatment programs, probation officer meetings, approved medical appointments, and IID maintenance appointments.

What’s an IID?

An IID connects to the vehicle dashboard and the driver breaths into the device prior to starting the vehicle. If the IID detects a BAC above the limit programmed the device (typically calibrated at .02%), then the engine won’t start. Read more about ignition interlock devices (IIDs).

Where Can I Find an IID Provider?

IID providers are approved for installation throughout Arizona. You can find a list of approved IID providers at the Arizona Dept. of Corrections website.

Who Pays For it?

In almost all cases the driver who has been convicted of a DUI/DWI pays for the installation and lease of the ignition interlock system. You can expect to pay up to $100 for installation (although some companies offer free installation) and between $75-$120 per month for the lease. This is a rough estimate and your price may be higher or lower depending on your location.
