Ignition Interlock Devices in Colorado

When is an IID Authorized?

Colorado has legislated the use of ignition interlock devices (IIDs) for certain drivers convicted of alcohol related driving offenses.

When are IIDs Required?

Colorado courts are required to order the installation and maintenance of an IID as a condition of reinstatement of driving privileges when:

  • 1st Per Se or DUI conviction. ("DUI per se" means driving with a BAC of 0.08 or more) Driver may be eligible to reinstate early after serving one month of revocation. A two year interlock requirement with BAC above .15 may be eligible to reinstate early.
  • 1st Per Se if under a separate driving restraint.  Driver may be eligible to reinstate early after either an 8 month interlock requirement or 2 years for Persistent Drunk Drivers (PDDs).
  • 2nd DUI + Per Se. 2 Year Interlock Required. Driver may reinstate early after serving one month.
  • Refused testing. Automatic two year interlock requirement.
  • Drivers whose BAC exceeds .149 (with previous alcohol-related driving offenses and continues to drive after a driver’s license restraint has been imposed for an alcohol related offense) Driver will be classified as a “Persistent Drunk Driver” and may be required to have an interlock device for 2 years after license reinstatement.

What’s an IID?

An IID connects to the vehicle dashboard and the driver breaths into the device prior to starting the vehicle. If the IID detects a BAC above the limit programmed the device (typically calibrated at .02%), then the engine won’t start. Read more about ignition interlock devices (IIDs).

Where Can I Find an IID Provider?

IID providers are approved for installation throughout Colorado. You can find a list of approved IID providers at the Colorado DMV website.

Who Pays For it?

In almost all cases the driver who has been convicted of a DUI/DWI pays for the installation and lease of the ignition interlock system. You can expect to pay up to $100 for installation (although some companies offer free installation) and between $75-$120 per month for the lease. This is a rough estimate and your price may be higher or lower depending on your location.
