How to Get a Handicapped Parking Permit in Hawaii
Learn how to obtain disabled plates and placards in Hawaii.
To qualify for disability parking plates or placards (sometimes incorrectly referred to as “handicapped stickers” or “handicapped hangtags”) in Hawaii you must meet one of the following requirements:
- Are diagnosed with an arthritic, neurological, renal, orthopedic or oncological condition that makes it difficult for you to walk 200 feet.
- Use or need assistance from a brace, cane, crutch, or another person, prosthetic device, wheelchair, or other device.
- Are restricted due to lung disease.
- Use portable oxygen.
- Are restricted by a cardiovascular disease.
You can seek either plates or a placard by completing and sending in Hawaii’s application for disability parking identification. A doctor's certification is required.
Types of Disability Access Parking Plates and Placards in Hawaii
Disabled drivers in Hawaii are entitled to either permanent license plates or placards or a temporary placard.
Abusing Disabled Parking Privileges
Any person who uses a parking space reserved for persons with disabilities in Hawaii and refuses or fails to present an identification card issued under this chapter or the rules adopted thereunder to an enforcement officer upon request shall be guilty of a traffic infraction and shall be fined not less than $250 nor more than $500.
