Bluetooth Headset Basics

These are Bluetooth devices that communicate with your bluetooth compatible cellular phone with a wireless signal based on the Bluetooth Protocol. No need for a complicated explanation here, it's a short range wireless signal that goes from the bluetooth device placed in your ear to your cellular phone that is located somewhere on your person, or very close by. The bluetooth ear-piece will work IF the phone is bluetooth compatible and if your have enabled bluetooth communication on your cell-phone.

Hands-Free Laws & Cell-Phones

The new hands-free laws in the United States have many people wondering if their cell-phones are bluetooth compatible. With millions of cell-phone users out there, there are bound to be more than a few frustrated users trying to figure out if they can become hands-free with their current phone.

First of all, if you have the manual that came with your cell-phone you should find out if your phone is bluetooth compatible by reading the manual. Secondly, if you know the make and model of your phone a simple Google search is a good place to start. Otherwise, read-on.

Why Would you Care?

  • Because you live in a state that has hands-free laws and you would like to use a wireless option to become hands-free.
  • Because you want the freedom of being hands-free, without wires, with your current cell-phone.
  • Because you think that bluetooth headsets are cool, and you like cool things.

With a million different cell-phones out there I realize that I can't cover all possibilities, but I will try to point you in the right direction. Look at the symbol below, this is the Bluetooth Logo. You may see this somewhere in your cell-phone settings or you may just see the word "Bluetooth".

                         Bluetooth Logo

My Blackberry has this logo on the "settings" screen along side the other icons, my "flip-phone", the "Free" phone I got with my family plan doesn't, I have to scroll through the "settings" menu to find the bluetooth configuration screen. If you find anything relating to "Bluetooth" on your phone, the odds are that the phone is bluetooth compatible.

I have a friend that received a "free" phone when he signed up for his new cellular service. His phone has no bluetooth, this is 2007 and I thought all of the new cell-phones were bluetooth compatible, obviously I was wrong.

Another thing you may want to try is the official Bluetooth Website. On the website they have the "Bluetooth Assembler". This tool lets you pick your cell-phone from a drop down box and find out if it is compatible. The tool works ok, although I didn't see all of the manufactures in there but if your in a bind you should give it a try. This link will take you to the Bluetooth WEBSITE.
