Speeding Laws

Police officers issue speeding tickets more than any other moving violations. Each state uses one or more of three types of speed limits, known as “absolute,” “ presumed” (or “prima facie” in legalese), and “basic” speed limits. (The most common is an “absolute” speed law in which you violate the law simply by riving one mph more than the speed limit.) Because each type of speed-limit violation often requires a unique defense, it helps to know understand your state’s laws. In this section we discuss and distinguish various state speeding laws.
