Bluetooth Headsets Come in all Shapes and Sizes

As you can see above, bluetooth headsets come in a variety of shapes , colors and sizes. Although they may look different, the headsets all operate using the bluetooth protocol and communicate with your bluetooth compatible cell-phone.

Some of the more popular brands are made by companies like Plantronics, Jabra, Logitech, Jawbone and Motorola. These companies are major players in the Bluetooth headset market. There are also a number of smaller companies that are moving into the field that offer competitive pricing.

Bluetooth Pricing and Cell Phones

Overall in 2009 the price of bluetooth headsets have dropped to new lows, there are newcomers to the bluetooth headset field and they are offering some of the lowest prices that have ever been seen in the headset market. While it's very difficult to resist buying a bluetooth headset for $19.95 you should be warned that all headsets are not created equal. One example is the "Jawbone" headset. This device costs a little over $100 and delivers above average sound quality and also has a "noise shield" that helps block out ambient noise. There's also the Jabra and Plantronics line of headsets that come highly recommended and have a longtime standing in the bluetooth community.

Another consideration is your cell-phone. Some cell-phones work better with different types of headsets. Most people already have a cell-phone and are considering purchasing a bluetooth headset to go with it. If your looking to buy a bluetooth headset, check the return policy to make sure you can return it if you are not happy with the quality of the item.

Battery life is also an issue. Being relatively small a long lasting battery is hard to get. Many of the newer headsets are boasting a 6-8 hour battery life. For example the Jabra JX10 says it will allow 6 hours of talk time and 200 hours on "standby" with the lithium-ion battery. Be sure to check the estimated battery life for that new $19.95 headset you have been looking at.

Sound quality is the #1 problem with many bluetooth headsets. Don't get me wrong, if your sitting in a quiet office all day talking on the headset you should be fine, but if your on the go, inside a car where the ambient noise is high you may sound like your talking in a wind tunnel to the person at the other end of the line. Remember just because you can hear them well doesn't mean that they understand what your saying on the other end. This is where products like Jawbone and the BlueAnt Z9 really out perform the ordinary bluetooth headset.

Too Proud To Plug?

So you don't want to walk around looking like a cyborg all day? Ok, wired headsets are for you, their cheap, easy to setup (Just Plug-n-Play) and when you get done you can just take them off. Wired headsets are the choice of many people who want to be hands-free without worrying about sound quality, price and a battery that might go dead in the middle of a conversation. I have had both and I will tell you that I get fewer complaints about the sound quality of a wired headset compared to the complaints I get about a bluetooth headset. In a word wired headsets are very "Practical" and they last forever. In the end the choice is yours, enjoy!
