Driver's License Point Systems

Most states use a point system to track drivers. Under these systems a driver receives a demerit, the amount of which is tied to the severity of the offense. The more demerits, the more likely the driver’s license will be suspended. Almost every state that uses a point system includes out of state violations, typically assessing the same points for an out-of-state violation as if it had been committed in-state. Some states provide a method for removing points either by maintaining a clean driving record or by taking approved driver’s safety courses.

Driving infractions are reported to your insurer, but the accrued points themselves have little significance for most insurers because they apply their own point system.
